Purpose:
Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance Planning and Compliance, the Fire Prevention Inspector is responsible for meeting the day-to-day challenges of providing fire inspection and testing services and fire code compliant facilitations across the Keele, Glendon and Markham Centre campuses of York University.Committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, the Fire Prevention Inspectors are committed to ensuring the fire safety of the Faculty, Staff, Students, and the General Public who work and visit York University's various campuses. The primary focus of this role is to reduce the potential of fire on the premises and to ensure the proper operation of fire alarm and fire protection systems in response to a fire emergency. Fire Prevention is vital in ensuring that all building construction, renovations, maintenance, and retrofits on the campuses are in compliance with the Ontario Building and Ontario Fire Codes.
Education:
College diploma or equivalent training on Fire Safety, Fire Alarm Systems and Fire Protection Equipment or an equivalent of 2 years recent experience (defined as within the last three years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.
Experience:
3 years of experience in the field of fire protection and prevention or equivalent amount of education and experience. Eligibility for membership in the Canadian Fire Alarm Association or Canadian Fire Sprinkler Association.
Skills:
Demonstrated understanding of fire alarm and fire protection systems. Demonstrated knowledge of current provincial building and fire codes. Ability to perform duties individually and within a team environment. Ability to perform duties with limited supervision as per recognized safe practices and procedures. Demonstrated ability to resolve technical problems. Demonstrated interpersonal skills. Demonstrated computer skills including:Introductory / Basic Word processing and spread sheet (MS Office Suites)Introductory / Basic email (Outlook)

Please note: This position requires the successful candidate maintain a valid Driver's License and a produce a satisfactory Driver's Abstract. The successful candidate would have to provide proof of a valid Driver's License and a satisfactory Driver's Abstract upon being hired.Please note: This position requires the candidate to produce a verification of degree(s), credentials(s), or equivalencies from accredited institutions and/or international equivalents at the time of interview. Hours of work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Assigned to a specific shift. Shifts may include 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm or 11:00 pm to 7:00 am. Summer: Reduced by one hour every Friday during the summer hours period, according to the shift assigned â?? i.e. if shift is 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, end time of shift will be 2:00 PM on Fridays.Requests to work overtime may occur periodically throughout the yearPeak periods for this position: Reading weeks, during renovations and annual fire alarm & protection equipment testing. Hours during peak periods: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PMVacation restriction: Vacation may be restricted due to operational requirements and other approved staff absences.
