Purrpose:
Under the general direction of the Manager, and the Civil Engineering Department Chair, the Senior Technician is responsible for the coordination, operation, and administration of laboratory activities and services within the Department. The role coordinates laboratory-based teaching and other departmental priorities by scheduling and coordinating laboratory spaces, technical support, equipment, supplies, and other resources to ensure the safe, efficient, and effective operation of departmental laboratories. The Senior Technician role supports the vision, mission, values and strategic direction of the Department of Civil Engineering, Lassonde School of Engineering and York University, and contributes to a positive, supportive, and student-focused team environment of high performance, respect, trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement. embraces diversity and fosters inclusion.
Education:
University degree in Engineering or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University or similar environment and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.
Experience:
Five years' recent-related work experience in a teaching and/or research laboratory setting, as a technologist and/or laboratory technologist in the educational sector, including one-year experience coordinating workflow in a laboratory setting. Experience in a Civil Engineering lab environment, with expertise in the various aspects of structural, geotechnical, water, environmental, and/or transportation lab activities is required. Experience supervising, training, and providing work direction to employees. Experience operating equipment and systems used in a civil/structural laboratory, including hydraulic actuators, load frames, overhead cranes, and other structural testing equipment. Experience using woodworking equipment and power tools for the fabrication of forms, molds, fixtures, and other experimental components.

Experience setting up teaching laboratories and supporting technical projects related to departmental operations.
Effective negotiation skills. Determines material and equipment needs and provides quotes/estimates. Knowledge:
Knowledge of machining processes and the capabilities of equipment such as lathes, milling machines, and portable machining equipment.
Knowledge of environmental and water technologies and geotechnical laboratory equipment and systems.
Familiarity with the Ontario Health Safety Act (OHSA).
