Purpose:
The main objective of the position is to assist in developing and maintaining the gallery's communications and marketing. This position engages all aspects of the art gallery's activities from exhibitions to publications. At an institutional level, the AGYU Communications Assistant will gain skills including research, writing, graphic design, website management, data-base management, and public relations. The Assistant will work directly with AGYU staff. This is an opportunity for anyone interested in gaining hands-on experience in contemporary art institutional practices and the processes, protocols and best practices related to the development, management and implementation of communications in a non-for-profit arts organization. The skills and knowledge obtained will greatly increase the assistants' marketability in the non-profit sector in general, providing particular skills in writing press releases, designing ads, developing databases, and audience out-reach. it will give the successful YCW's applicant knowledge of contemporary art, working closely with artists to contextualize artwork for media and audiences. the AGYU Communications Assistant will also gain art-writing skills and knowledge in designing and maintaining a website.

Education:
The candidate will have a diploma or degree from an arts-related field (art history, visual arts, museum studies, cultural studies, communications, or related discipline)

Experience:
The successful candidate should have gallery or publishing related experience, having worked for a museum, artist-run center, public or commercial contemporary gallery, or art publication previously. Or equivalent, experience working for as an artist's assistant. They will have published or presented writing in a public forum. Having professional experience as a researcher will be an asset.

Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English. Research and organisational skills, including various computer applications, will be required. As the gallery functions on a non-hierarchical model, self-motivating initiative will be expected.

Candidate must qualify for the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage (graduates) program of the Department of Canadian Heritage (https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/funding/young-canada-works/students-graduates/careers-heritage-graduates.html).An individual is eligible for this position if they:
 are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible).
 are legally entitled to work in Canada.
 are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
 are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.
 will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program.
 are unemployed or underemployed.
 are a college or university graduate.
 are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program. and
 have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.
