Purpose:
The position is responsible for providing technical support to activities within the faculty and related technical areas within the faculty and related technical areas. Services include: Demonstration of equipment and techniques to shop users. design, construction, modification, repair, testing and installation of various equipment and instruments required for teaching and research purposes in a cost-recovery environment. To act as a resource to shop users including graduate and undergraduate students and oversee students' activities within the Shop to ensure adherence to operating procedures and health and safety protocols.
Education:
Post-secondary/community college diploma in a related field such as Mechanical Techniques Certified Tool and Die Making, Mechanical Engineering Technician. Certification as a Tool and Die Maker, Machinist, or equivalent trade certification is required.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of related experience â?? mechanical/electro-mechanical design and fabrication. Experience designing, constructing, modifying, repairing, testing and installing various complex apparatus. Experience in fabrication of teaching and/or research apparatus preferred.
Skills:
Theoretical and practical knowledge of a wide range of mechanical and electro-mechanical elements and machinery including sheet-metal work and carpentry work as well as welding skills to an advanced level on stainless steel, mild steel and aluminum
Skilled and/or expert in repairing, maintaining, operating and operational problem-solving of a variety of machine-shop equipment
Ability to exercise considerable judgment concerning specification of material and fabrication procedure suitable to the workshop and need to establish workshop schedules to maximize workshop efficiency
Meticulous attention to detail
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Thorough knowledge of manual and CNC machine shop processes
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Demonstrated ability to problem solve and show initiative
Experience with instructing others in a shop environment
Experience with monitoring inventory
Must be able to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals
Demonstrated success in building and maintaining professional relationships
